Bryant, Lakers use late run to down Clips

Basketball Betting Lines

11/06/2008 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kobe Bryant didn't shoot the lights out but recorded a game-high 27 points as the Lakers put on a defensive clinic in the fourth quarter to keep the Clippers winless with a 106-88 decision.

Bryant shot 8-of-21 from the field and got contributions from Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher, who chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the 4-0 Lakers.

Andrew Bynum scored nine points and brought down a game-high 17 rebounds for the Lakers, who have beaten their intra-city rivals six straight times.

Al Thornton posted 22 points, and Tim Thomas netted 18 off the bench, but neither was a factor in a wretched fourth quarter for the Clippers, who have yet to win in five games to start the year.

Baron Davis added 17 points while battling foul trouble most of the game.

The Lakers drained 32-of-45 from the foul line, while the Clips struggled to get to the stripe, shooting at a 10-for-15 clip.

"We settled in defensively in the fourth quarter," Bryant said. "We tried to make them take tough shots. We just applied constant pressure. Even though we have games we don't shoot well, we play defense well."

A Cuttino Mobley three-ball and layup gave the Clippers an 81-79 lead with 8:15 remaining in the game, but the second-fiddle franchise proceeded to go scoreless for the next seven-plus minutes.

The Lakers had their way offensively down the stretch. Drives to the bucket resulted in free throws and kick-outs to wide-open three-pointers from Fisher and Odom.

The defending Western Conference champs made 12-of-16 from the charity stripe during a 22-0 stretch in the final quarter that easily put the game away.

"I was disappointed in our guys," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Down the stretch the Lakers were tougher and we got softer. We played good basketball tonight. Our ability to carry it through was disappointing."

The Lakers, pitted as the home team in the lopsided battle of LA, trailed 29-27 after 12 minutes before rattling off eight points to open the second.

Thornton brought the Clips back by scoring seven consecutive points late in the second period to spark a 13-3 run, putting the underdogs ahead 51-47 at the break.

The lead exchanged hands five times in the back-and-forth third session, with the Lakers building a 72-68 lead heading to the final frame.

Game Notes

The Lakers already handed the Clippers their worst home-opening defeat in franchise history, a 117-79 drubbing, on October 29th...Chris Kaman and Thomas recorded 11 rebounds apiece for the Clippers. Mobley and the Lakers' Vladimir Radmanovic each had 11 points.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
